Leverage the Power of Play!

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” -
Benjamin Franklin
Learning by doing is by far the best way to learn. The retention of such a learning is also very high.

According to Socratic method of teaching "Teachers need to lead by posing thought provoking questions!"

Experiential Learning (EL) programs uses both of these 2 powerful tools. Doing & Reflection.
EL provides a sandbox in which participants experiment in a themed environment and get to Reflect on the actions that they took. This then gets extrapolated into possible work place actions!
At we design unique experiences that follow certain principles:
-
The Focus is on the Behaviours
-
The "Result" or "WIN" is not the focus - The process of achieving it IS!
-
The Group dynamics - How people work collaboratively? - is important.

Advantages of EL method:
Learning by Doing:
- The traditional Instructor Learning Training (or ILT) is more of a teaching method or 'Tell' method.
-
At the next level, Facilitating a discussion might help participants understand the concepts better.
-
However, Learning by doing, and then reflecting on the 'Outcome', is the highest form of Learning, the retention is much more than any other form.

Adult Learning Theory:
As opposed to Pedagogy, Andragogy ( "art and science of teaching adults.") a theory conceived by Malcolm Knowles, states that adults do not process, comprehend or retain information in the same manner as children.
Adult learners follow certain characteristics:
-
Preference for self-directed learning
-
Finding Relevance - Ability to draw on life experience to assist with learning
-
Just in Time Learning - A willingness to learn when transitioning into new roles
-
Immediate Application - of new knowledge to real-life situations and problems
-
A tendency to be internally motivated (rather than externally)
Experiential Learning method provides an opportunity to the learners to do all the above!

Change in Mindset:
As employees grow, the focus continues to be on honing their Skillset and Toolset. Since these had given them success in the past, employees continue to build these skills more voluntarily.
However Success has a Third element - That of Mindset!
It is a higher order thinking skill that makes people think of - "What is possible?" "How would a change impact me/us?" "What assumptions am i making about this situation?" etc.

Experiential Learning method focuses on shifting people's mindset to a new possibility!

Group Dynamics
Most employees have grown from the grassroots from being an individual contributor. So, when they put on a group context and asked to solve problems collaboratively, they are stuck.
Individual brilliance vs Collective stupidity!
The need for setting up Group norms, Ensuring process discussions happen before the content discussion etc. makes a lot of difference in Organisation success.

Experiential Learning precipitates the challenges of Group / team work and helps the team members to understand, appreciate & leverage team potential!
